Dads & Grandparents

Because you’re emotionally invested in the health and happiness of both mom and baby, and because you have the potential to either champion or undermine breastfeeding success, fathers and grandparents play a special role in the breastfeeding family.

One study found that strong approval of breastfeeding by fathers is associated with a 98% breastfeeding incidence, compared to just 26% when the father is indifferent to the feeding choice. Clearly, dads, your support is vital.

And the same goes for grandparents. Research shows that the attitude and support of grandparents—particularly the new mother's own mother—is a significant influencing factor in a mother's decision to breastfeed and in the success of breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding may take a few weeks for mother and baby to learn to do. During this crucial time, shower the new mother with your approval, love, and appreciation for the time and effort that she spends nursing the baby. If you feel that outside help would be beneficial, say so. In fact, you can purchase a gift certificate for the new mom. One-on-one coaching offers practical help, extra emotional support, and follow-up care as needed.

And remember, even if you’re not feeding the baby, there are lots of ways to connect with your child or grandchild. Bathing, cuddling, playing, diaper changes, and singing are all wonderful ways to bond with your precious little one.

Testimonial

“Cindi spent time with my husband which he liked. She was very inclusive and supportive of the breastfeeding family, a term she used that made me aware of all the things my husband was doing to support our breastfeeding experience. My husband found her professional and invested in us, rather than the feeling that the clock was ticking for payment.”
